I woke in the cave of my heart,
a slim shadow nested inside
an unbounded shadow,
and there, after decades of chatter
and prattle, I found you, silence.
Or more truly, after my clanging
and crying, my praising and soothing,
silence found me.
Quiet comforter.
Place of no promises.
Infinite cradle. Infinite womb.
An endless invitation to wake
forever.
I woke in the cave of my heart
being tuned to join a song I knew
but had never been taught,
a song ringing inside every cell.
Whatever I’d thought
was my own voice was one silken thread
in a warp made of silence,
a weft made of song.
I met there all the beauty I could bear.
Is it here even now as I sit in my room
with the low hum of lights

                  with thanks to Dante

Gluttony stumbles in, four shots of tequila past tipsy.
It’s easy when he’s drooling and raging
to put my hand over my own glass of wine
and tell him I’ve had enough. But he’s so charming
in the beginning when he’s giggly and flirty,
when his walls come down and he’s chatty
and generous. That’s when I hand him my glass, too,
and fall in love again with the taste of grapes
that have been warmed by sun and turned potent
by time and I feel in me the sweet flutter of opening.
Sometimes Temperance arrives with her face
contorted, lips tight and prudish. I tend to ignore her then.
But oh—when she enters that opening space
with her sober smile, eyes clear as a mountain stream.
Sweetheart, she says to me, what do you really want?
There is a moment, then, when I reach in two directions—
one toward light-headed shine, one toward grounded earth.
I am learning to love that moment, when I hold hands
with both of these teachers at once and we move together
three steps forward one step back, the ancient dance
of the middle road, ever changing as it is.

The Journey Begins with Catastrophe
a one-hour preview of a journey with Dante
Kayleen Asbo & Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer
February 29, 11-noon Mountain Time, zoom

How did Dante get to the place where he wrote the Divine Comedy? Have you ever wholly lost your way? Found yourself on the shores of humility? Join me and my amazing and beloved friend Kayleen Asbo, cultural historian, musician, and art historian, for a 60-minute preview of our new collaboration, Writing with Dante, a three-part workshop. This first one-hour program on Feb. 29 is free, though donations are gratefully accepted.

Kayleen will lead us by the hand to explore connect our lives with the psychological landscapes of Dante’s Divine Comedy through a feast of art, music and storytelling. I’ll guide writing and sharing to help weave our conversations, questions and explorations into our own lives.

The series continues:
March 7 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. mountain time, In the Dark Woods: Reading and writing into Dante’s Inferno

April 4 10 a.m – 2:30 p.m. mountain time, The Mountain of Hope: Reading and writing into Dante’s Puragatory

May 2 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Coming Home to a Place of Belonging: Reading and writing into Dante’s Paradise
