Sometimes it needs to be very dark
before I can remember 
I carry the sunrise inside me—
more blushing suggestion of light
than real brightness, 
almost shy in its tenderness, 
as if knows this palest pink is all 
the light I am capable of meeting right now.
By noon, I could almost forget
such gentleness, but even then, 
the softer light is there, 
hiding in plain sight,
restrained, as if to remind me, 
this quietly, this slowly
is how a new chapter 
might begin.

It’s like moving west around the earth
so I might stay in perpetual sunrise—
moving to stay in that moment when the day
is blushing with potential.
 
But sometimes when I am very still,
I notice the sunrise within.
And I wake and I wake, and I wake
and by doing nothing, begin again.

It is late morning
before the sun rises
over these red cliffs,
Golden halos blaze
behind the evergreens.
 
What luck on winter solstice
to watch the sun rise twice—
like getting to fall in love
two times with the same lover.
 
May the sunrise always remind me
to fall in love again with the world.
Every morning may I know the choice
to open the heart and see myself
as the world.

not be the same
people we were
when we met
the sun this morning.
