This, too, is Christmas, the quiet
walk on the quiet road in the quiet air.
The only carol here—
unending verses of river.
The only gifts we brought—
our attention, our trust.
This feast is for the heart.
There is a generosity to the sunshine
no candle could equal.
It’s a deep sweetness
to be wrapped in blue sky,
a deep sweetness
to share heartache, exhaustion—
something I would never wish for anyone,
and yet, this Christmas day,
the sharing of it,
such a beautiful present.

It’s tiny hexagonal ice crystals
in the earth’s atmosphere
that create the bright halo
around the moon.
Think of it,
so many scraps of borrowed light—
so that I shine
becomes the song
of something
with no glow of its own.
Just because its science—
refraction and reflection—
doesn’t mean it’s not a miracle.
Just ask anyone who, for a time,
has lost their own light
then receives it from another
who received it from another,

The cupboards, she discovers,

have little to offer, but she

finds in a corner some purple potatoes,

and, on slicing them thin, finds

white and purple patterns

swirled like stained glass.

She approves. Pours oil

in the skillet. Nods at the splatter

when the potatoes slide in.

A cauliflower in the back

of the fridge. Yes. She breaks

off florets and adds them.

Some tofu. She crumbles it,

scrambles it, lets the foods meld.

Then lemon. Then rosemary.

Then chile. Then wait. She stirs.

when out of what seems to be nothing,

we find magnificence. Enough

to share. Enough to make us think

abundance is hiding everywhere.

If we are running out of time,

no one has told that to the avocado

which sits on the counter

hard and light green as if

not only will there be

a tomorrow, but in fact,

things might just be

much more delicious then,

so smooth, so perfect,

so ready to be shared.

for Joi Sharp

And there they appeared,
all around me, roses,

lilies and delphiniums blue,
and even some flowers

that weren’t in season—
lilacs, azaleas

and birds of paradise,
all of them blooming,

abundant and blooming,
the air hung with sweetness,

the petals so soft,
and for a while I thought

oh! for me! my flowers!
my bouquets! Until

one by one, though reluctant
at first, and with some pouting throughout,

I was guided to give them away
and they were much

lovelier then.
