Open me.
Not just the heart

but the all of me
so that when

I rise in the morning
the song of the birds

enters me and I am the song.
Let me meet the breeze

with even less resistance
than the dancing leaves

and let me feel how
I am the breeze.

Erase the word mine
from these lips

and replace it
with nothing.

The sweetest fruit
comes from
the orchard floor,
strewn with apricots so ripe
they have yielded
to the weight
of their own juice.

What we choose
to do with our weight.

The fall,
says my teacher,
is more painful
the higher we go.
And fall, she says,
we will.

Let me use my weight,
then, as apricots do,
as sweet proof
that some make it
through the frost.

And when I fall,
let me fall as apricots do,
with full surrender to falling.

My daughter says,
“Mom, me never live
in clouds before.”

She is two.
“Do you want to?”
I ask her.

“Mm hmm,” she says.
And I, too, want
to inhabit a world

I have never lived in before—
want to live in the inner sky,
in each note of the song

as it unwinds
from the breath,
in the silence after,

in the world
that can never be spoken.
I want to root out

everything I know
and live in that empty garden
where the only thing

that blooms is what is.
My daughter
moves on to chatter

about how girls
swallow rocks.
“Makes me cough,”

she says. And I wonder
how many rocks
even now

are rattling
in my throat.
