I realized I was yearning for more than the riches the blessing of the day had brought.
—Alan Cohen, “Visitations”
Give me the napkins with stains on them,
the ones we’ve used for seven years.
Give me the butter dish with the broken lid,
the sound of my husband lightly snoring
on the couch with the missing buttons,
and the wild laughter of children
so loud I cannot hear the woman
on the other end of the phone.
Give me these wrinkles, this gray,
this softness I used to despise.
Give me exactly this life
that I have, wealthy with messes
I have helped to create, so rich
with nitty-gritties
that some nights I forget
that somewhere there’s a clean,
quiet, unbroken world
I once thought
I wanted to be part of.
That is brilliant. You have captured that in between state I think so many of us experience, and done so with real tenderness and humanity. Bravo. And I sit here taking notes for a story I’m writing attempting to do the same, the nature of distractions and our inability to ever really ‘be,’ how rare it is. Cheerio, – Bill
Bill, thank you so much for sharing this. Wishing you good luck with your story! Rosemerry

Thanks kindly. Don’t stop doing what you’re doing even if you find a way to tell yourself to.

Cooo-cooooo! I¹ve been enjoying your book, Alan, easy read and rich with insight and even a few surprises (like the rose not even yet bloomed).
I love you r

A winner. You invite me to embrace the life I’ve made. I think sometimes that looking back is not the opposite of looking ahead, it’s a negation of looking ahead. Ahead is the only place the remaining options are….
Thank you, Dear Rick
Yes to these lives we¹ve made.

“Wealthy with messes” is so right, for me, for the rest of us living in the richness of the moment.
