In two nights, the killing frost will come.
Because I know this, I wander the garden
and talk to the broccoli, the nasturtiums,
the cilantro. I thank the beets for their willingness
to grow. I tell the onions what is coming.
Tomorrow I will pick enormous bouquets
and fill the house with orange flowers.
Tomorrow I will sit in the garden
and try to store the beauty in my body
though I know it doesnโt work that way.
Please, just one more day, just one more month,
just one more life to try to get it right,
just one more chance to be as attentive
as I am when I know it is almost over,
the basil dark green, the marigolds crinkling with gold.

Thank you.
Rather different weather, but this feels perfect to me today as we’re facing “extreme hot winds” today and overnight in the Portland, Oregon metro. I’m sitting outside right now, soaking it up before I batten down the hatches in the garden…
Very different weather! Ours is past now … and the garden survived! Covered it up three nights, whew!
I’m imagining all the additional poetry this upcoming wild temperature swing is going to elicit from you. ๐
oh friend, it was a wild swing. and then today so beautiful … warm and clear. I am so grateful for the rain, and here where I live, it wasn’t a deadly cold, though I covered everything up anyway–got lucky this time.
So sorry frost is coming so early there. Hopefully we have another month, maybe two, in Ohio. It’s very good that you see the beauty of all seasons.
Love you Rosemerry!
Now that it’s past … and the garden is still intact thanks to covering it all up and warmer than predicted temperatures … i HOPE we get another month! Good luck with your garden, Ann!
