Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days.

How did I miss them,
the first brandywine tomatoes,
hiding in the underleaves,
their skin so red,
my tongue so very, very ready?

Maybe
You and I were talking of the amount of water the plants needed.
Or the cutter worms we’d observed.
Or the way the basil loves to be with the tomatoes.
Maybe.
The underleaves, such a nice noun, as opposed to hiding under the leaves.
My tomatoes did not survive the cold early summer.
