Picket and vinyl,
wattle, wire,
hedgerow, concrete,
electric, iron,
post and rail,
chain link, stockade
zig zag, spear top,
palisade,
barbed wire, round pole,
dry-stone wall,
see them fall,
see them fall,
see them fall.

Perhaps it’s due to the thrice-chanted closing line that I’m hearing again echoes of Ring Around the Rosies. And I like that “good fences make good neighbors” and “unity” are both tags for this same poem. (“We’re all alone together in this.”)
I like the intonations of this poem. I’m thinking of using it for my mantra, replacing the one I picked up from _Rango_: Crunchy. Creamy. Cookie. Candy. Cupcake. ;~)
PS—You get extra points, Rosemerry, for using “wattle.”
PPS—I actually DO like this poem’s intonation and rhythm. (Thought my winking conclusion after saying so might have tainted it.)
I’m starting the poem with the idea of welcoming because of the title, but I’m ending with a tongue-in-cheek sort of welcome, one that seems like an accounting for all the barriers between speaker and neighbor. I know these could be just construction details, but for me they sure lean toward separation.
