standing in the snow
dreaming of standing
in the snow
*
my daggers
letting them gather dust
regardless who walks in
*
starting a fire
remembering even good logs
need space to burn

1) Being pleased and content with what you have. (Or,” Living the dream.”)
2) Forgiveness. (Or, “For display purposes, only.”)
3) Allowing others their space. (Or, the opposite of, “S/He’s touching me!”)
Even in Kyoto– hearing the cuckoo’s cry– I long for Kyoto.
cuckoo’s cry is the calling to death or the other word. great minds think alike.

Yes! Of course I have this poem tucked into my brain and probably have it somewhere in this poem, too … though the direct inspirations were a comic in the New Yorker from a while back in which a man is sitting at his desk surrounded by his books, computer and phone, and the bubble of him has him dreaming of his desk surrounded by his books, computer and phone. And as sad as it was in a way, i thought when i first saw it, it was absolute bliss. It is what we all aspire to! And the second inspiration, of course, was standing in the snow while it was dumping out while I was skiing up at Priest Lake … my poem lacks what Basho’s has, that really stunning reliance on understood metaphor … the cuckoo cry/death … how beautifully he paints so many layers in so few words. Man I adore Basho. Thanks for the recollection!
Oh, I like the daggers especially, since that’s what I am thinking recently and I plan to take your poem as a mantra. Happiness is such a gift, and the daggers have such a nasty way of circumventing happiness.
