written on occasion of the Telluride Gondola’s 20th Anniversary
Though we focus on arrivals,
charmed are the places in between,
these dangling intervals
where we belong equally
to earth and to sky,
to the valley and the top of the ridge.
Good traveler, suspended
between here and there,
it’s a good time to ask questions
of fellow travelers, of yourself,
of the passing world.
In these spaces
between who we’ve been
and who we will be,
the more we look around
the more we notice
how wonder has joined us.
Sometimes, as we arrive,
we find wonder
does not leave us.
