Somewhere in Cygnus

Just before sleep,
my son says he heard
about a solar system

with three suns.
I try to imagine
the gravity of it,

wonder how
it might change
our ideas of god

not to mention love
if we, too, looked up
and saw all that light.

I used to think
we were
our stories.
Now, I believe
in something
more spare,
stripped of
plot
and title
and character.
Still something
in you touches
something
in me. It’s more
in the silence,
though,
more in the way
the light
makes a nest
of your hand.

Brush

The rose petals are gone.
No way to know now
what color they were.
The only perfume here
the scent of November.
The rose hips are dried,
splayed into brown stars.
I once thought that I
could bloom forever.
In our hands the leaves
crinkle and crush.
This is what we were born
for. To grow. To fall.
To know ourselves as dust.

Higher Math

Two flames
become one
fire, two drops
become one water,
two breaths become
one air, two stones
become one sand,
two grains bake
one bread, two
lovers make
one life
but there
are so many more
than two
and now
we get
to learn
what else
a flame, a drop,
a breath, a grain,
a love can do.

God turns you from one feeling to another
and teaches by means of opposites,
so that you will have two wings to fly,
not one.
–Rumi

I am stone and I am river.
I am here and I am gone.
I am the apple and the hunger.
I am lost and I am found.
I am harlot and the pure one.
I am chosen. I’m tossed out.
I am mystery and revelation.
I am certainty and doubt.
I’m the one you love,
you hate me, too,
I am leaf and the space
where the leaf once was.
I am thief and I restore things.
I am the anchor and the wave.
And I am the song, the song
that stays in your mind
long after you’ve told it to leave.
And I am the silence, the silence
you welcome and the silence you fill
with anything, anything
just to keep the silence away.
I am not myself.
I am more you than I am me.
And we, we are flying,
we are flying, love,
we are the sky, we are the wings.

In the field
the ache of brokenness
is less.
Everything here
is broken.
Ground. Stems.
Sound.
I could bear
almost anything
I think
if I sit here long enough
alone
in tall dry grass
with the sun
slung low
and still warm
enough,
the wind
stirring the air
and carrying
my thoughts
some other where
till all that is left
is sky mind
and sky
a field
a winging shadow
passing through
my shadow.

Three Surprises

aslant
the freezing rain
turns sleet—
on the trail
laughter our boat

*

speaking
all my secrets
to the pebbles—
the gray spider
eavesdrops

*

once pulled
from the stem the petal
will never again stick—
in my hand
bare sunlight

Poet, you do not need to smile.
No need to lean toward me
as if whispering the secret that will save me.
You do not need to know anything
for certain. Please.
Here we are in silence.
Your eyes, they are so naked.
Let’s not speak. Not even
these beautiful words we’ve been given.
